The Kingdom of Cambodia is probably most famous for being home to one of the world's most impressive man-made wonders. Angkor Wat is one of a handful of places everyone should visit during their lifetime, though it's just the beginning of this enigmatic country that has so much to offer. Angkor was the capital of the powerful Khmer Empire, which controlled most of Indochina (the former French colonies of Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia) from the 11th to the 14th centuries. The scars of war under Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge are largely healed now in this lovely Buddhist constitutional monarchy of extremely gracious people, delicious cuisine and rich cultural history.
